A small plastic and copper device that is put into the womb that works by stopping the sperm from meeting an egg. It starts working as soon as it is put in and can stay in for up to 10 years. Like the injection and the implant once it’s in you don’t need to think about contraception until it’s removed. An IUS (Intrauterine system) is similar to the IUD but it also releases the hormone progestogen into the womb, which has the same effect as the injection and implant.

This method of contraception is over 99% effective, so it is a very successful alternative of contraception.

Small chance of getting an infection during the first three weeks after insertion. For more information about intrauterine device click here.
