An injection of the hormone progestogen, which releases slowly into the body. It is usually injected into the top part of the thigh/hip and gives you contraceptive protection for up to three months. Rather than having to remember to take a pill everyday you can have an injection instead. The injection works in the same way as the pill works by controlling the hormones in the female body and stopping ovulation.

Over 99% effective, less than 1 woman in 100 will get pregnant in a year. The injection will not protect you from STIs.

Periods may stop, be irregular or longer whilst on the injection. Periods and fertility may take up to a year to return after stopping the injection. Once it has been injected it cannot be removed from the body. For more information please click here.
